No.3 The Elephant and Castle Mounted Print
No.3 The Elephant and Castle Mounted Print
The area has Roman origins and was originally two villages, Walworth and Newington, surrounded by fields, marshland, and market gardens. Two roads intersected in the area, providing access to the Roman town of Londinium.
Name origins The name "Elephant & Castle" comes from a coaching inn that opened in 1765. The inn was a last stop on the way into or out of London. The name may have come from the Worshipful Company of Cutlers, a group of medieval craftsmen who made swords and knives. The company's crest, granted in 1622, showed an elephant carrying a castle.
